What patient positioning can be used to facilitate palpation of the supraclavicular lymph nodes

To facilitate palpation of the supraclavicular lymph nodes, the patient can be positioned in the following way:

1. Have the patient sit comfortably on the examination table or chair.

2. The patient's chest should be slightly elevated. This can be achieved by asking the patient to lean back a little.

3. Ask the patient to drop their shoulders and tilt their head slightly towards the side opposite to the one being examined. This helps to relax the muscles in the area and provides better access to the supraclavicular area.

4. Stand behind the patient. This position gives you the best access and view of the supraclavicular area.

5. Use the pads of your second, third, and fourth fingers to palpate the supraclavicular area. Start from the middle of the clavicle and move laterally towards the shoulder.

6. Ask the patient to take a deep breath. This causes the supraclavicular lymph nodes to descend and makes them easier to palpate.
