In your own words, define cultural appropriation, and give two (2) examples of how educators and SSOs can avoid it within an education and care context.

Cultural appropriation is the act of adopting elements of a culture that is not your own, particularly when those elements are used outside of their original cultural context and when they are borrowed from a minority culture by members of a dominant culture. This can often lead to misunderstanding, stereotyping, and marginalization of that culture.

1. Educators and SSOs can avoid cultural appropriation by promoting cultural appreciation and respect. This can be done by teaching students about different cultures in a way that is respectful and accurate. For example, instead of having a "Cinco de Mayo" party where students wear sombreros and mustaches, which can perpetuate stereotypes, educators can teach about the history and significance of the holiday in Mexican culture.

2. Another way to avoid cultural appropriation is by involving people from the culture you are teaching about. For instance, if you are teaching about Indigenous cultures, invite Indigenous community members to share their traditions, stories, and experiences. This ensures that the culture is represented accurately and respectfully, rather than being reduced to stereotypes or exotic novelties.
