Solution

Baddeley's model of working memory, proposed in 1990, suggests that the phonological loop, one of the subsystems of working memory, consists of two components: the phonological store and the articulatory control process.

  1. Phonological Store: This is often referred to as the "inner ear". It holds auditory memory traces of words and sounds that we hear, but these traces are very fragile and unless rehearsed, they start to fade away within a couple of seconds. This component is responsible for the temporary storage of verbal and acoustic information.

  2. Articulatory Control Process: This is also known as the "inner voice". It is responsible for the rehearsal of information stored in the phonological store. It keeps refreshing the memory traces in the phonological store by subvocal repetition, which prevents them from decaying. This process allows us to remember things like a phone number or an address long enough to write it down or use it in some way.

In summary, the phonological loop uses these two components to store and manipulate verbal and acoustic information within our working memory.
