Solution

The calorific value of a fuel is the amount of heat energy produced when a known quantity of that fuel is burned under specific conditions. It is usually expressed in joules per gram (J/g) or kilojoules per gram (kJ/g).

The calorific value of a fuel can be measured in two ways: Gross Calorific Value (GCV) and Net Calorific Value (NCV).

  1. Gross Calorific Value (GCV): This is the total amount of heat released when a unit quantity of fuel is completely burned in oxygen, and the products of combustion are cooled back to the original temperature of the fuel and oxygen. This value includes the latent heat of vaporization of water in the combustion products. In other words, it assumes all the water of combustion is condensed and the heat contained in the water vapor is recovered.

  2. Net Calorific Value (NCV): This is the amount of heat released when a unit quantity of fuel is completely burned in oxygen, and the products of combustion are cooled back to the original temperature of the fuel and oxygen. However, unlike GCV, this value does not include the latent heat of vaporization of water in the combustion products. It assumes the water in the combustion products remains as vapor and the heat in the water vapor is not recovered.

In summary, the main difference between GCV and NCV is whether they include the energy in the water vapor in the combustion products. GCV includes this energy, while NCV does not.
