Solution

(i) Reimer-Tiemann reaction:

The Reimer-Tiemann reaction is a chemical reaction used for ortho-formylation of phenols; with the help of chloroform (CHCl3), under basic conditions to form salicylaldehyde.

The general equation for the Reimer-Tiemann reaction is:

Phenol + CHCl3 + KOH → Salicylaldehyde + KCl + H2O

(ii) Williamson synthesis:

The Williamson synthesis is a reaction that is used to prepare ethers from alkyl halides and sodium alkoxides. This reaction is an SN2 reaction in which the alkoxide ion is a nucleophile that displaces the halide ion from the alkyl halide.

The general equation for the Williamson synthesis is:

R-O- Na+ + R'-X → R-O-R' + Na+X-

Where R and R' represent alkyl or aryl groups and X represents a halide ion.
