Solution

  1. The three types of muscle tissue are:

    a. Skeletal Muscle: This is a type of muscle tissue that is attached to bones. It is responsible for all voluntary movements in the body. These muscles are striated (have a banded appearance) and are under conscious control.

    b. Smooth Muscle: This type of muscle tissue is found in the walls of organs and structures such as the esophagus, stomach, intestines, bronchi, uterus, urethra, blood vessels, and the arrector pili in the skin (which are responsible for goosebumps). Smooth muscle is involuntary (not under conscious control), non-striated, and is able to maintain prolonged contractions.

    c. Cardiac Muscle: This type of muscle tissue is found only in the heart. Its contraction pumps blood throughout the body. Cardiac muscle is also involuntary and striated.

  2. The different types of muscle contractions are:

    a. Isotonic Contractions: These occur when the muscle changes length as it contracts and causes movement of a body part. There are two types of isotonic contractions - concentric (muscle shortens) and eccentric (muscle lengthens).

    b. Isometric Contractions: These occur when the muscle does not change length as it contracts. The muscle tension increases but there is no movement or change in length.

    c. Isokinetic Contractions: These are a type of isotonic contraction where the muscle changes length during the contraction and the speed of the entire movement is kept constant. This type of contraction is often used in physical therapy.

    d. Eccentric Contractions: These occur when the muscle lengthens as it contracts. This is often the controlling, slowing down phase of a movement.

    e. Concentric Contractions: These occur when a muscle shortens as it contracts. This is often the lifting phase of a movement.
