Solution

The structure that sends electrical signals in the heart, causing it to beat regularly, is the Sinoatrial node (SA node) or commonly known as the natural pacemaker of the heart.

Here are the steps of how it works:

  1. The Sinoatrial (SA) node (located in the right atrium of your heart) sends out an electrical impulse.

  2. The atria (the top chambers of the heart) contract and this pumps blood into the ventricles (the lower chambers of the heart).

  3. The electrical impulse then reaches the atrioventricular (AV) node (located on the pathway between the atria and the ventricles).

  4. There is a short delay to allow the ventricles to fill with blood.

  5. The AV node sends the impulse into the bundle of His (a collection of heart muscle cells specialized for electrical conduction that transmits the electrical impulses from the AV node to the point of the apex of the fascicular branches).

  6. The bundle of His divides into right and left pathways to provide electrical stimulation to both ventricles.

  7. This causes the ventricles to contract, pumping blood to your lungs and around your body.

  8. The cycle then begins again in the SA node.
