5. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood in the capillaries into the water.
6. Oxygen-rich blood is carried away to the rest of the fish's body.
7. Water exits through the gill opening (operculum).

This sequence illustrates how water circulates through the gills of a fish, enabling respiration.
