Question
Outline the main types of emissions to the atmosphere and the associated impacts.
What is:
a. GHG
b. Ozone depletors
c. acid rain
d. smog producers
Solution
a. GHG (Greenhouse Gases): These are gases in the Earth's atmosphere that trap heat. They let sunlight pass through the atmosphere, but they prevent the heat that the sunlight brings from leaving the atmosphere. The main greenhouse gases are: Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous oxide (N2O), and Fluorinated gases. The increase in greenhouse gases caused by human activity is often cited as one of the major causes of global warming.
b. Ozone Depletors: These are substances that deplete the ozone layer. The main culprits are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform. These substances are often found in refrigerants, aerosol propellants, and foam-blowing agents. Depletion of the ozone layer can lead to higher levels of UVB reaching the Earth's surface, which can cause skin cancers and cataracts in humans and harm to aquatic ecosystems.
c. Acid Rain: Acid rain is a broad term referring to a mixture of wet and dry deposition (deposited material) from the atmosphere containing higher than normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. The precursors, or chemical forerunners, of acid rain formation result from both natural sources, such as volcanoes and decaying vegetation, and man-made sources, primarily emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) resulting from fossil fuel combustion. Acid rain has been shown to have adverse impacts on forests, freshwaters and soils, killing insect and aquatic life-forms as well as causing damage to buildings and having impacts on human health.
d. Smog Producers: Smog is a type of air pollution that reduces visibility and has harmful health effects. Smog can be caused by a variety of factors, including burning fossil fuels, car exhaust, and industrial emissions. Smog can cause or exacerbate health problems such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other respiratory problems as well as eye irritation and reduced resistance to colds and lung infections. The ozone in smog also inhibits plant growth and can cause widespread damage to crops and forests.
