Solution
There was a time when I helped my younger brother with his chemistry lessons. He was in his first year of high school and was struggling with the subject, particularly with understanding the concept of balancing chemical equations.
He needed help because he was finding it difficult to grasp the concept on his own. Despite his best efforts, he was unable to understand the logic behind the balancing of chemical equations. He was also getting stressed because his exams were approaching and he was not confident about this topic.
To help him, I first tried to understand where exactly he was facing difficulty. I realized that he was not clear about the basic concept of the conservation of mass. So, I started by explaining this fundamental principle to him. I used simple examples from daily life to make him understand that in any chemical reaction, the total mass of the reactants is always equal to the total mass of the products.
Once he was clear about this, I moved on to the actual process of balancing chemical equations. I explained the steps to him and also showed him how to apply these steps through several examples. I made him practice a lot of equations and corrected his mistakes, explaining where he went wrong.
After a few days of consistent practice, he was able to balance the equations on his own. He thanked me for my help and said that he felt much more confident about the topic. He later told me that he did well in his exam and that the questions on balancing equations were the easiest for him.
