Solution

The IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tag is not necessarily required for frames with source and destination ports on the same switch. Here are the steps:

  1. The source device sends a frame to the switch.
  2. The switch checks the VLAN of the source port. If the source port's VLAN is the same as the destination port's VLAN, the switch forwards the frame directly without adding a VLAN tag.
  3. If the source port's VLAN is different from the destination port's VLAN, the switch adds a VLAN tag to the frame. The VLAN tag includes the VLAN ID of the destination port.
  4. The switch forwards the frame based on its MAC address table. If the destination device is in the same VLAN as the destination port, the switch removes the VLAN tag before forwarding the frame to the destination device. If the destination device is in a different VLAN, the switch forwards the frame with the VLAN tag.
  5. The destination device receives the frame. If the frame has a VLAN tag, the device checks the VLAN ID in the tag. If the VLAN ID matches the device's VLAN, the device accepts the frame. If the VLAN ID does not match, the device discards the frame.
