Play-based learning is a structured approach where educators design activities with specific learning outcomes in mind. For example, a teacher might set up a pretend grocery store to help children learn about money, numbers, and social interactions. The children are playing, but they're also learning important concepts and skills in a structured environment.

On the other hand, free play is unstructured and child-led. This means children are given the freedom to play however they want, with minimal adult intervention. For instance, a child might choose to build a castle out of blocks, create a drawing, or run around the playground with friends. While they're playing, they're also developing creativity, problem-solving skills, and physical abilities.

In summary, play-based learning is more structured and guided by adults, with specific learning goals in mind. Free play, however, is more spontaneous and led by the child's interests and imagination. Both are important for a child's development, offering different opportunities for learning and growth.
