Solution

India is divided into the following major physiographic divisions:

  1. The Himalayan Mountains:

    • These are the youngest and the highest mountain ranges in the world.
    • They form a barrier for the monsoon winds, causing heavy rainfall in the region.
  2. The Northern Plains:

    • These are formed by the alluvial deposits brought by the rivers - the Indus, the Ganga, and the Brahmaputra.
    • The plains are very fertile and are the most densely populated regions of the world.
  3. The Peninsular Plateau:

    • This is one of the oldest and the most stable landmasses of India.
    • The plateau is rich in minerals and fossil fuels.
  4. The Indian Desert:

    • It is located in the western part of India, in the state of Rajasthan.
    • The region receives very low rainfall, less than 150 mm per year.
  5. The Coastal Plains:

    • These are narrow strips of land that run parallel to the coastline of India.
    • They are known for their natural harbors and fertile soils.
  6. The Islands:

    • India has two major island groups - the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal.
    • These islands are known for their unique flora and fauna.
