Solution

The reason why silver ions form a new compound with chloride ions but not with sodium ions is due to the nature of ionic bonding.

  1. Ionic bonding occurs when there is a transfer of electrons from one atom to another, resulting in the formation of positive and negative ions. The positive ion (or cation) is usually a metal, and the negative ion (or anion) is usually a nonmetal.

  2. In this case, silver (Ag) is a metal and chloride (Cl) is a nonmetal. Silver loses an electron to become a positive ion (Ag+), and chloride gains this electron to become a negative ion (Cl-). The opposite charges of these ions attract each other, forming an ionic bond and resulting in the compound silver chloride (AgCl).

  3. On the other hand, sodium (Na) is also a metal, like silver. If silver were to react with sodium, both would tend to lose electrons and become positive ions. However, like charges repel each other, so it's not energetically favorable for two cations to bond together. Therefore, silver does not form a compound with sodium.

  4. Furthermore, in a solution, sodium exists as Na+ ions and chloride as Cl- ions. Silver has a higher affinity for chloride ions due to its higher charge density compared to sodium ions. Therefore, Ag+ ions will displace Na+ ions to bond with Cl- ions, forming AgCl.
