Solution

In ancient Roman society, citizens were primarily divided into two main classes: the Patricians and the Plebeians.

  1. Patricians: This was the smaller, but more privileged class. The Patricians were the aristocratic class, made up of the wealthy landowners and the ruling political class. They were the ones who held high public office in the Roman Republic.

  2. Plebeians: This was the larger, but less privileged class. The Plebeians were the common people. They were farmers, laborers, merchants, and craftsmen. Although they were citizens with their own rights, they had limited political power in comparison to the Patricians.

The division between these two classes was not rigid and over time, the Plebeians were able to gain more political power and social mobility.

As for women in Roman society, they were not considered citizens and did not have the same rights or privileges as men. They were largely confined to the private sphere and their main roles were to manage the household and to bear children. However, women from wealthier classes could exert some influence through their husbands or sons. They could also own property and run businesses. Over time, women's status in Roman society improved, but they were still not equal to men.
