Proxemics, a term coined by anthropologist Edward T. Hall, refers to the study of how people use space in communication. According to Hall, interpersonal space can be classified into four primary categories, which are as follows:

1. Intimate Distance: This zone ranges from 0 to about 18 inches (0 to 46 cm). It is reserved for close relationships, where physical touch and intimate interactions occur, such as between close friends, family members, or romantic partners.

2. Personal Distance: This zone extends from about 18 inches to 4 feet (46 cm to 1.2 m). It is the space used for casual conversations among friends or acquaintances. In this range, individuals feel comfortable sharing information without feeling crowded.

3. Social Distance: This category ranges from about 4 feet to 12 feet (1.2 m to 3.6 m). It is typically used for interactions in formal settings, such as business meetings or social gatherings where the level of intimacy is lower.

4. Public Distance: This zone extends beyond 12 feet (3.6 m) and can go up to about 25 feet (7.6 m) or more. It is used for public speaking or when individuals interact with a large group. In this space, communication tends to be less personal and more about transmitting information to a wider audience.
