Why did Gandhiji give a call to start Non-Cooperation Movement? Which activities gave momentum to this Movement?

Mahatma Gandhi gave a call to start the Non-Cooperation Movement in response to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the Khilafat issue. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre was a brutal incident where British troops, under the command of General Dyer, fired upon a peaceful gathering of Indians in Amritsar, causing the death of hundreds. The Khilafat issue was related to the unfair treatment of the Caliph of Ottoman Turkey by the British. Both these incidents deeply hurt the sentiments of Indians and led to a strong desire for freedom from British rule.

The Non-Cooperation Movement gained momentum from various activities. Some of these were:

1. Surrender of titles: Many Indians who had received titles and honours from the British gave them up as a sign of protest.

2. Boycott of law courts: Lawyers like Motilal Nehru, C.R. Das, and others boycotted law courts and started national schools and colleges.

3. Boycott of foreign goods: Indians were encouraged to boycott foreign goods and use only Indian-made goods (Swaraj goods). This led to the revival of domestic industries and handicrafts.

4. Non-attendance in government functions: Indians stopped attending government functions and ceremonies as a sign of protest.

5. Resignation from government services: Many Indians resigned from government services to show their non-cooperation with the British government.

These activities created a sense of unity and nationalism among Indians and gave a strong momentum to the Non-Cooperation Movement.
