Question
Explain the following terms as used in computer networking:
- Network (1 Mark)
- Link (1 Mark)
- Node (1 Mark)
- Routing (1 Mark)
- Bandwidth (1 Mark)
Solution
i. Network: A network in computer terminology is a group of two or more computer systems linked together. There are many types of computer networks, including local-area networks (LANs), wide-area networks (WANs), metropolitan-area networks (MANs), personal area networks (PANs), etc.
ii. Link: In computer networking, a link refers to the connectivity between two devices. It includes the type of cables and protocols used in order for one device to be able to communicate with the other.
iii. Node: A node is any physical device within a network of other tools that’s able to send, receive, or forward information. A personal computer is the most common node. It's called a host. Other devices like cell phones, tablet, and gaming consoles can also be nodes.
iv. Routing: Routing is the process of selecting a path for traffic in a network or between or across multiple networks. Broadly, routing is performed in many types of networks, including circuit-switched networks, such as the public switched telephone network (PSTN), and computer networks, such as the Internet.
v. Bandwidth: In computer networking, bandwidth refers to the data rate supported by a network connection or interface. It represents the capacity of the connection. The greater the capacity, the more likely that better performance will result. It's usually measured in seconds.
