Solution

This process is known as ovulation. Here are the steps:

  1. The menstrual cycle begins with the menstrual phase, which is marked by the shedding of the uterine lining and bleeding. This phase lasts for about 5-7 days.

  2. The next phase is the follicular phase. During this phase, the pituitary gland releases a hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This hormone stimulates the ovaries to produce a number of small sacs called follicles. Each follicle contains an egg.

  3. As the follicular phase progresses, one follicle becomes dominant and continues to grow while the others degenerate. The growing follicle produces estrogen, which stimulates the growth of the uterine lining.

  4. Around the middle of the menstrual cycle (about day 14 in a 28-day cycle), the level of another hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) surges. This LH surge triggers ovulation, which is the release of the egg from the dominant follicle.

  5. After ovulation, the egg is swept into the fallopian tube and begins to travel towards the uterus. If sperm are present in the fallopian tube, fertilization can occur. The days leading up to and including the day of ovulation are the most fertile days of the menstrual cycle, and this is when a woman is most likely to get pregnant.

  6. If the egg is not fertilized, it disintegrates and is shed along with the uterine lining during the next menstrual period. If the egg is fertilized, it implants in the uterine lining and begins to grow into a baby.
