If one is looking for a ASU or Chico state style campus they will be sorely disappointed. I'm not much for partying, so I sincerely enjoyed the maturity, serenity and safety of the Cal Poly Humboldt Campus. Their CARE and CAPS services for folks who struggle like me are world class. The professions are field leading giants who enjoy the area.
Overall 5
Best school for peace quiet and ability to grow.

Loved this campus!
Overall 4.8
I have been to twp other universities and earned a degree from one other but Humboldt was by far the best of all. I miss it dearly.
Overall 4.6
This is an excellent school with a very high quality of life. There is lots to do for the nature lover and even for those who aren't. Arcata is a college town and caters to the needs of students. The STEM programs are excellent as well as non-STEM too. Beautiful location, nice people, great staff/faculty, and much more.
Overall 4.6
GIS classes are terrible I keep having to repeat all of my assignments considering dropping because it takes time from my other studies. I have redone almost every assignment. Terrible software. The software to download GIS maps in Arc Maps takes forever sometimes an hour. I am so angry.
Overall 4.6
HSU is absolutely amazing. I gave it 2 less-than-amazing ratings, though. I rated its reputation a 3 because the greater population seems to underestimate it, and I gave safety a 3 because of some of what goes on in Humboldt County, though I consider the campus itself fairly safe when compared to other college campuses.
Overall 4.5
Cal Poly is great for STEM students, lots of opportunities with local organizations to expand on your learning. Engineering and physics faculty have been great. Arcata is quaint, beautiful, community based, and not infiltrated with big business. My experience has been far from isolating; nature and good company is the primary entertainment here.
Overall 4.5
Beautiful campus in an unparalleled setting in terms of natural beauty. Professors that care and engage one on one. Be prepared for rainy gray weather, and feeling cut off from city life.
Bad reviews
Overall 1.1
I went to this school during Covid. I am STILL dealing with ties from this place, and I am at peace leaving it behind me. Some of the rudest staff I've ever dealt with, they do not respond timely unless it is on their schedule. Constant danger alerts, terrible Wifi connection. Did a retro drop (had a grant) and the school still charged me. Awful :(
Overall 1.5
IF YOU ARE APPLYING TO COLLEGES AND ARE CONSIDERING HSU: DON'T DO IT!!! save yourself the time and money. The school is terribly run, and the natural beauty of the Arcata area DOES NOT make up for it. I had absolutely terrible advisors and professors, and the administrative faculty is even more useless and incompetent.
Overall 1.5
I don't like it here. The food is nasty, the WI-FI sucks, and there is nothing to here. Also, I do not feel safe at this school.
Overall 1.6
Professors here could care less about actually teaching the students on the class, all they care about is telling the students what they think about any given political issue. Housing facilities dont work and are always filled its people smoking. The housing office has done nothing to stop it.
Overall 1.7
Poor values in the campus culture, poor choices made by just about everyone from the top down, and poor campus. High on postmodern BS which shoots right past PC pretentiousness and lands in delusional ridiculousness.
Overall 1.9
This school doesn't care about housing its students. The school has accepted far too many new students without preparing the infrastructure to accommodate such a change. If you want to come to this school, be aware that applying to live "on-campus" means that they will put you in a literal Motel 6 in a sketchy area of town.
Overall 1.9
I visited the campus before I transferred and thought I would love it here. The small town vibe got old fast though because there isn't much to do here. Most students (not all), believe in pseudo-spiritual ideas and think that yoga and shrooms are the cure for everything. I love my major though and the professors are great.
Overall 2
This school doesn't care about you, or any of its students, just the money. Sure, it's in a beautiful area, but that's about it. A lot of the professors are absolutely amazing, but a lot of them are not very good. This school lulls you into a false sense of security and then by your second year removes your housing and leaves you on the streets.
Overall 2
the wildlife program is well known but so under funding that you won't learn a thing. Great professors, but 8000 year old equipment doesn't help you learn any real world application. Go to any other school and you'll be better off.
