Question
Briefly explain the following infrastructural attacks:
i. Denial of service
ii. Worms (4 Marks)
Solution
i. Denial of Service (DoS): This is a type of cyber attack where the attacker makes a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host connected to the Internet. This is typically accomplished by flooding the targeted machine or resource with superfluous requests in an attempt to overload systems and prevent some or all legitimate requests from being fulfilled.
ii. Worms: These are a type of malware that spread copies of themselves from computer to computer. They can do this without any human intervention or help. Unlike a computer virus, a worm can spread itself automatically. Once a worm is on a system, it can perform a variety of malicious tasks, such as deleting files on the system, sending documents via email, or encrypting files and asking for a ransom.
