The recruitment and training of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in India is a rigorous and comprehensive process that is designed to select and prepare the best candidates for service in the country's police force.

The recruitment process begins with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination. This is a nationwide competitive examination in India conducted for the recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the IPS. The exam is considered one of the toughest in India, with a success rate of just 0.1-0.3 percent of the total applicants.

The Civil Services Examination consists of three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Personality Test (Interview). The Preliminary Examination is objective in nature and acts as a screening test only; the scores obtained in this stage are not counted for the final merit. The Main Examination consists of nine papers and is subjective in nature. The Personality Test (Interview) is the final stage and is conducted by the UPSC; it is intended to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service.

Once candidates have passed the Civil Services Examination and have been selected for the IPS, they are sent to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad for training. The training lasts for a period of two years and is divided into two parts: Basic Course and Practical Training.

The Basic Course lasts for about 11 months and includes indoor and outdoor training. Indoor training covers various subjects like law, Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, Evidence Act, forensic science, management and behavioral sciences, public administration, and police leadership and management. Outdoor training includes physical training, drill, horse riding, swimming, field craft, map reading, and handling of weapons like rifles, revolvers, and sten guns.

The Practical Training is conducted in the field, at the district level. During this period, the trainees are attached to various wings of the police and other allied departments to get a first-hand experience of police work. They are also exposed to various aspects of policing like crime prevention, maintenance of law and order, traffic management, community policing, and cybercrime.

After successful completion of training, the IPS officers are allocated to different state cadres where they will serve the majority of their service. They are responsible for maintaining law and order, preventing and investigating crimes, ensuring public safety and security, and managing traffic and emergency situations.
