  3. Death of the Organism: When the organism dies, it stops absorbing carbon. The carbon-14, however, continues to decay at a known rate.

  4. Measurement: By measuring the ratio of carbon-12 to carbon-14 in a sample and comparing it to the ratio in a living organism, it is possible to determine the time of death of the organism.
