Solution

  1. Explanation of Electromagnetic Waves and Their Properties:

Electromagnetic waves are waves that are created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field. In other words, EM waves are composed of oscillating magnetic and electric fields. They are a form of energy known as electromagnetic radiation.

The properties of electromagnetic waves include:

  • They can travel through a vacuum (like space), as well as through air, solid materials etc.
  • They travel at a constant speed of approximately 3.00 x 10^8 meters per second in a vacuum.
  • They are transverse waves, with the electric and magnetic fields oscillating at right angles to each other.
  • They have different wavelengths and frequencies, which constitute the different types of EM waves (radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays).
  1. How Electromagnetic Waves are Generated by Phones:

Mobile phones communicate by transmitting radio waves through a network of fixed antennas called base stations. Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic wave. When you speak into a mobile phone, a microphone in the phone turns your voice into an electrical signal, which is then transmitted as radio waves to the nearest base station. The base station sends your call through the telephone network until it reaches the person you are calling.

  1. How Electromagnetic Waves Travel Through Space:

Electromagnetic waves travel through space at the speed of light, which is approximately 3.00 x 10^8 meters per second. They do not need a medium to travel through - they can travel through the vacuum of space. This is how light from the stars billions of kilometers away can reach us.

The waves are carried by particles called photons, and they move in a straight line unless something reflects or refracts them. They can also be absorbed by matter, which is why we can't see light from a torch if something solid is in the way.
