Solution

Primary reinforcement refers to a type of reinforcement that uses physiological needs as rewards, such as food, water, or sleep. These are naturally satisfying and require no learning to be effective. For example, when a rat presses a lever and receives food, the food is a primary reinforcer because it naturally satisfies a biological need.

Secondary reinforcement, on the other hand, refers to a type of reinforcement that uses stimuli which have become associated with primary reinforcers as rewards. These are learned through conditioning. For example, money is a secondary reinforcer because it can be used to purchase primary reinforcers like food and water. It's not naturally satisfying, but we've learned to associate it with the satisfaction of our needs.
