Despite their wealth, they were often looked down upon because their wealth came from the work of others. They were considered necessary but were not given much respect or high social status.

Role: The role of the Emperor was to rule and govern the kingdom. He made laws, decided on policies, and was responsible for the welfare of his subjects. He was also the supreme military commander. The role of the merchant, however, was to engage in trade and commerce. They bought goods from producers and sold them to consumers, often traveling long distances to trade. They played a crucial role in the economy of ancient China, but they did not have any political power or authority.
