Solution

The diagram that shows the transfer of energy from one organism to another is called a food chain. Here's how it works:

  1. The food chain starts with the primary producers, which are usually plants or algae that create their own food through photosynthesis. They get their energy from the sun.

  2. The next level of the food chain is made up of herbivores, or animals that eat plants. These animals are called primary consumers because they consume the primary producers.

  3. The next level is made up of carnivores, or animals that eat other animals. These are secondary consumers because they eat the primary consumers.

  4. Some food chains also have a third level of consumers, called tertiary consumers. These are animals that eat secondary consumers.

  5. Finally, at the top of the food chain are the apex predators. These are animals that have no natural predators.

  6. When animals die, they are broken down by decomposers like bacteria and fungi. These decomposers also break down the waste products of living animals. In this way, the nutrients are returned to the soil and can be used again by plants.

A food web is a more complex version of a food chain. It shows all the different food chains in an ecosystem and how they overlap. This gives a more accurate picture of how energy is transferred in an ecosystem, because most animals eat more than one type of food and are eaten by more than one type of predator.
