Solution

The respiratory system is protected in several ways:

  1. Nasal Hair: The first line of defense in the respiratory system is the nasal hair, which traps larger dust particles present in the air we breathe.

  2. Mucus: The respiratory tract is lined with mucus that traps smaller dust particles, bacteria, and other foreign substances. The mucus also helps to keep the respiratory tract moist.

  3. Cilia: These are tiny hair-like structures present in the respiratory tract that move in a coordinated manner to move the mucus (along with trapped particles) towards the throat. This mucus is then either coughed out or swallowed.

  4. Coughing and Sneezing: These are reflex actions that help to expel irritants from the respiratory tract.

  5. Alveolar macrophages: These are immune cells present in the lungs that engulf and destroy bacteria and other foreign substances.

  6. Epiglottis: This is a flap of tissue that closes over the windpipe when we swallow, preventing food and drink from entering the lungs.

  7. Pleural membranes: These membranes surround the lungs and create a space (pleural cavity) that is filled with fluid. This fluid allows the lungs to move smoothly during breathing, and also helps to protect the lungs from injury.

  8. Rib cage: The rib cage protects the lungs and heart from physical damage.

  9. Diaphragm: This is a muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity and aids in breathing. It also provides additional protection to the lungs.

  10. Immune system: The respiratory system is also protected by the immune system, which helps to fight off infections. For example, white blood cells can attack and destroy bacteria and viruses that manage to reach the lungs.
