Salts can be acidic, basic, or neutral depending on the ions that make up the salt compound.

  1. Acidic Salts: These are formed when a strong acid reacts with a weak base. In water, the salt dissociates to form its constituent ions. One of these ions can react with water to form hydronium ions (H3O+), thereby increasing the acidity of the solution. For example, when ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) dissolves in water, it forms ammonium ions (NH4+) and chloride ions (Cl-). The ammonium ion can donate a proton (H+) to water, forming hydronium and ammonia (NH3).

    NH4Cl -> NH4+ + Cl- NH4+ + H2O -> H3O+ + NH3

  2. Basic Salts: These are formed when a strong base reacts with a weak acid. In water, the salt dissociates into its constituent ions. One of these ions can react with water to form hydroxide ions (OH-), thereby increasing the basicity of the solution. For example, when sodium acetate (CH3COONa) dissolves in water, it forms acetate ions (CH3COO-) and sodium ions (Na+). The acetate ion can accept a proton from water, forming acetic acid and a hydroxide ion.

    CH3COONa -> CH3COO- + Na+ CH3COO- + H2O -> CH3COOH + OH-

  3. Neutral Salts: These are formed when a strong acid reacts with a strong base. In water, the salt dissociates into its constituent ions, but neither of these ions reacts with water to form hydronium or hydroxide ions. For example, when sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolves in water, it forms sodium ions (Na+) and chloride ions (Cl-), neither of which reacts with water.

    NaCl -> Na+ + Cl-

In each case, the acidity or basicity of the salt is determined by the strength of the acid or base that formed it.
