The National Quality Standard (NQS) is a key component of the National Quality Framework (NQF) in Australia. It sets a high, national benchmark for early childhood education and care, and outside school hours care services in Australia. It gives services and families a better understanding of a quality service, helping families to make informed decisions about their child’s education and care. The NQS brings together the 7 key quality areas that are important to outcomes for children.

The seven Quality Areas are:

1. Educational program and practice: This area covers the educational aspects, including the implementation of a program that is engaging and enhances children's learning and development.

2. Children’s health and safety: This area focuses on supporting and promoting children's health and safety.

3. Physical environment: This area ensures the physical environment is safe, suitable and provides a rich and diverse range of experiences that promote children's learning and development.

4. Staffing arrangements: This area ensures there are enough qualified staff to give children the attention they need.

5. Relationships with children: This area focuses on educators developing respectful and caring relationships with children.

6. Collaborative partnerships with families and communities: This area focuses on active communication and engagement with families and the community.

7. Governance and leadership: This area ensures effective leadership and governance of the service which contributes to quality environments for children's learning and development.

Each of these areas is rated by the regulatory authorities who administer the National Quality Framework, contributing to an overall rating for each service.
